Caught in the Path of a Freight Train
November 14 at around 11:40 a.m. a freight train collided with a passenger car, resulting in one person being hospitalized. The accident occurred on the Charentsavan-Hrazdan section in the village of Kaghsi, when the off-road vehicle drove onto the tracks at an unprotected railway crossing equipped with road signs and observation mirrors and ended up in the path of a train. Despite the measures taken by the locomotive crew, sounding horns and emergency braking, the collision could not be avoided. The driver of the car, a resident of the same village, was hospitalized with bodily injuries in the medical center of the city of Hrazdan. As a result of the collision, the electric locomotive was damaged, and the freight train had to be removed from the section with the help of additional rolling stock.
Also on the night of November 13-14, around midnight, on the Zod-Vardenis section, in violation of traffic rules, a passenger car drove onto an unguarded crossing, as a result of which it was hit by a freight train weighing over 1,600 tons. The emergency braking applied by the driver did not prevent the accident. According to the preliminary version, the driver of the car was intoxicated.
The number of road accidents over the past period of the current year has grown to 11 cases, which exceeds the same indicator of the previous year by 3 cases. The South Caucasus Railway once again calls on drivers of motor vehicles to comply with traffic rules when crossing/moving across railway tracks, which will save the lives and property of citizens.
